Releasing Stress Through Meditation

In meditation, there is constant observation of the mind, bringing awareness, harmony and natural order into life. When you touch the inner self through meditation, you are touching your own divine spirit. Meditating daily strengthens that connection and reminds you of the power and beauty that you truly are and that you came here to express in your own unique way. Meditation lets one rest within the inner self to discover the wisdom and tranquility that lies there.

Pointers on Meditation

Here are some simple, basic things to do when attempting to meditate. However, it is usually a good idea to work with a teacher or someone who has been meditating for a long time so that they can answer your questions and help guide you as you progress in your ability to go to deeper levels. Meditation is a part of Kerala Ayurveda's yoga classes and Academy courses.

  • Have a special place and specific time for meditation. For the best results, daily practice is important.
  • Choose a time when your mind is generally calm, usually this is in the first hours of the morning.
  • Sit up straight with your back; head and neck aligned. Facing north or east is beneficial.
  • Regulate your breathing. Notice the breath in and the breath out. Keep your shoulders relaxed and your stomach soft.
  • Place your hands, palms up on your lap, thumb and forefinger gently touching.
  • Breathe slowly and deeply maintaining a rhythmic breathing pattern.
  • Start with 5 minutes of deep breathing.
  • Don’t worry if your mind wanders. Just bring it gently back to your breath.
  • When you are ready, you can chose to focus on the third eye, that point between the brows, raised a bit and repeat a word or phrase that has a calming effect on your mind. You can also open your eyes and focus on a rock, a crystal, a candle flame or any point in front of you and down a bit. Maintain the slow, steady breathing pattern.§Hold your object of concentration at this focal point throughout your session.
  • Try to do at least 20 minutes per day.

Meditation will take many forms. You will find immediate benefits in stress reduction through the sense of peace and calmness you experience.

Take at least ten minutes to enjoy that peacefulness after your session. The calming benefits will stay with you throughout the day. Immediately after rising from meditation is also a great time remembering to find gratitude for your life and the people and things in it.
